Sprucing Up Reddit’s Data Playground: Fresh Terms & Snazzy Mod Tools

When Reddit first launched its Data API seven years ago, the aim was to help developers create cool products for users and moderators.

Fast forward to now, they’re updating their terms for developer tools and services to make everything clearer and more secure, while ensuring a more sustainable and healthy ecosystem around Reddit data.

They’re also introducing new moderator tools for Reddit’s iOS and Android apps to improve the experience.

The new Developer Terms apply to all Reddit developer services, making it easier for third parties to understand how to use Reddit data.

While the Reddit Data API will still be open for reasonable and appropriate use cases, a new premium access point is being introduced for third parties who require additional capabilities, higher usage limits, and broader usage rights.

These updates aim to protect user privacy, security, and adhere to local regulations while maintaining access to Reddit data for legitimate purposes, including building or training AI products, as long as developers comply with the updated terms.

As for moderator tools, expect updates to mod logs, rule management, and additional mod queues.

Reddit is also focusing on building Mod Mail for native apps and improving core mod actions.

These updates aim to align developers and researchers with Reddit’s principles and values while strengthening trust with users.
